Fruit & Vegetable Scheme
You may have heard about the Government’s School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme. Under the scheme, each child aged four to six in LEA-maintained schools will be entitled to receive a free piece of fruit or vegetable each school day. Scientists agree that everybody, including children, can reduce their risk of heart disease and cancer by eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day. On average, children in the UK eat only two portions a day. Pupils in the foundation stage, year one and year two are offered a free piece of fruit or vegetable each day. The fruit and vegetables will be fresh and of good quality. The aim is for the children to have a positive and enjoyable experience of fruit and vegetables. I am delighted that our school has been given the opportunity to participate in this exciting scheme, which reinforces our commitment to healthy eating. From your child’s first day at school your child will be offered a free piece of fruit or vegetable each day. I do not expect the scheme to disrupt the normal school day in any way. The fruit and vegetables will be fresh and of good quality. The aim is for the children to have a positive and enjoyable experience of fruit and vegetables. The scheme is voluntary, and although there is no obligation for your child to take part, I hope you will share my belief that it has many benefits. It is a great way to help us teach our children the benefits of healthy eating.; If you do not wish your child to participate in the scheme, you must let me know before they start. It is essential that you inform us of any allergies your child may have so that we can ensure they are not given anything that might harm them. If you have any questions, please contact the school fruit and vegetable co-ordinator, Mrs. Bradshaw. |

It is really important to drink plenty throughout the day. Water is available at all times at school and drinks can be purchased from the canteen at lunchtimes in the Key Stage 2 Hall but it is also a good idea to pack your child a drink in a carton or a leak proof plastic bottle. |
|
Try water, milk, smoothies and diluted real fruit juices. Avoid carbonated and sugary drink as these can damage teeth! |
KEEP IT SAFE Check out our tips below to make sure your packed lunches are safe!
If you make your lunch the night before, keep it in the fridge! Keep chopped fruit or fresh vegeatbles in a small box with a lid Keep sandwiches moist by wrapping them in clingfilm, greaseproof paper or foil. You can always pop them into sandwich bags if that is easier! KEEP IT COOL! The best type of lunch box is an insulated one with a little freezer pack in it REMEMBER TO WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE EATING!
