Admissions Criteria |
The Local Education Authority (LEA) sets criteria for the allocation of school places. It is the LEA that has responsibility for admissions, not the school. The LEA follow the following criteria;
"If more pupils want to go to a school than there are places available, the following criteria will be applied in order of priority to decide how places will be allocated...
-
Children with a Statement of Educational Needs (SEN)
-
Children under the care of the Local Authority (Looked After Children)
-
Brothers and Sisters of pupils who currently attend the school
-
Children living within the catchment area of the school where the parents express a written first preference for the school
-
Children with medical grounds for admission. The medical grounds must relate to the child and medical certificates must be submitted with the application
-
Children living nearest the school. Distance will be measured in a straight line between the centre of the main school site and the front door of the pupils home"
Where the application of the above criteria results in a situation where there are more children with an equal right of admission to the school than the number of available places, the distance criterion stated in criteria 7 (above) will be used as a 'tie-breaker' to resolve the matter.
The admissions criteria will be applied separately and sequentially until all places are filled. Priority is not given within each criterion to children who meet other criteria. Thus, if more children meet criterion 1 than there are places available, then all area preferences will be considered on an equal basis with the 'tie-breaker' being the distance criterion as in criteria 7 (above).
Admission Arrangements
Children now start school in the September prior to their 5th birthday. Pupils move on to Secondary school in the Autumn term following their 11th birthday.
Parents should notify the school as soon as possible that they wish their child to attend the school. From September 1999 this process needs to be done in writing.
When a child begins school we request evidence to confirm their address. This is important as address is the key criteria for admission. The form of evidence normally required is a Child Benefit book and a copy of a utility bill.
Parents are welcome to visit the school. We advise all parents of their legal right to view and express a preference for any school, but this does not mean that your child has a right to attend the school.
Moving House
Once children have been accepted into a school they are not forced to leave because of a change of address. The school should be notified of the changes for contact purposes, but as long as the parents are willing to transport their children they may continue to attend the same school. The admission of subsequent siblings, however, cannot be guaranteed.
